Fiesta amidst the Pandemic
The Philippines being a religious nation, all puroks, barangays, towns, municipalities have their patron saints, and there are fiestas always in honor of these saints.
One of the fiesta here in the Philippines is the Vigan City Fiesta held every January 25. It is celebrated during the feast day of the conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. St. Paul is Vigan City’s patron saint. Before his conversion, St. Paul was known as Saul, a zealous persecutor of Christians. After he was touched by a personal encounter with Jesus Christ on his way to Damascus, his name was changed to Paul and he endured a lot of hardships and danger to spread the word of God to far places.
This fiesta always causes for gatherings and celebrations. And what comes with celebrations, food of course. But this year we aren't able to celebrate the fiesta in traditional way because of the pandemic that still spreading. Despite of the pandemic,we still able to conduct some event, like the misa concelebrada for St. Paul.
Fiestas are important events because they merge and nurture culture, history, family relationships and camaraderie, and also introduce us to new acquaintances.
I hope that the tradition of celebrating fiestas in honor of our patron saints will not be relegated to an urban legend in the future.
